This tour is tailored for nature lovers, hikers and thrill seekers who would love a week of adventure around Sri Lanka. This does not cover the cultural triangle but focuses more on the hill country and the Southern beach area where adventure awaits.
We take a relaxed start in Colombo and move inland, exploring the best locations where we can be closest to trees and wildlife.
We commence our journey with a relaxed stay at our hotel in Colombo to refresh after the flight. This densely populated judicial capital too has a lot to offer from mouth watering street food, vibrant cafes and restaurants, well preserved colonial buildings, shopping malls and other recreational activities.
Touring the city by tuk-tuk is a wonderful experience while in Colombo. Pettah markets, Red Mosque, Gangarama temple, Lotus tower, Galle face and the Port City are among a lengthy list of places you can visit while in Colombo.
Let us take you on a food tour to boost your taste buds with spices from East to West. From sea food platters to burger towers, from shawarmas to crepes, from rotis to pastas, from tea to chai; Colombo serves them all.
We leave the city after breakfast and soon be on our way towards Kithulgala, for an exciting white water rafting experience. You can select the inclusions of your package according to the level of adventure you crave. White water rafting, confidence jumps, waterfall abseiling, zip lining, white water/flat water canoeing, and cycling are among the main activities you can include in your stay in Kithulgala.
After breakfast, hop onto a double canoe and cross the Kelani River to enjoy a trek up the hill in Makandawa Forest reserve. The path lies under a well covered canopy of trees and vines that make the trek a fantastic experience. There are different routes taking you to separate viewpoints and waterfalls. At the summit of the hill is a natural pool where you can enjoy some time in the water, refreshing and relaxed.
Highlight – We can also visit the Belilena prehistoric cave which was home for Balangoda man who roamed the mountainous regions of ancient Ceylon 32,000 years from today. The trek to the cave will be a bit challenging but will have wonderful photo experiences. The cave is behind a waterfall which makes it more interesting to explore the site. Apart from the remains of Balangoda man, you can also see the fossilized remains of animals used for food; such as pigs, barking deer, sambhur, monkeys, giant squirrels, and an assortment of reptiles and fish.
This is another extremely beautiful area of the hill country which could be considered a heaven for hikers and adventure seekers. From easy to the most challenging, there are so many trails for you to explore in this area and we bet you cannot cover them all. Therefore we have added just a few must do activities to be covered in 2 days.
After breakfast at the hotel we leave towards the South for our next adventure. On the way to Belihuloya we stop near a tea plantation for a quick photo break.
After checking in at the hotel we trek towards Pahanthudawa Waterfall for a relaxed evening. The waterfall is named after the shape it creates when cascading to the pond underneath. It takes the shape of oil lamps we have in Sri Lanka hence it was named Pahan-thudawa; Pahan (lamp) Thuda (point). No matter how confident you are in swimming, do not jump to the 1st pool as it drags the swimmers to the bottom making it impossible to escape.
If you’d like a better adventure you have the option to go on a longer trek through the grassy plains and forests. The trek can be altered according to the time you have and how much of a challenge you crave. It is advisable to carry camping gear, snacks, sufficient water, insect repellent and a drone to capture the breathtaking landscape you cover. Below are a few trekking routes you can choose from.
Pahanthudawa waterfall – Lanka Ella waterfall- Bambarakanda waterfallBambarakanda is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka . We can also climb up to the point where the water starts cascading down to the pool below. Camping on the top of the island’s highest waterfall would be a wonderful experience.
Bamdarakanda Waterfall – Devil’s staircase waterfall – Devil’s staircase viewpointAt the end of the trail we can either request the driver to take us back to the hotel in Belihuloya or stay the night in Ohiya, which is the closest town. The next morning we will take the train to Haputale and meet our driver at the station and return to the hotel for lunch.
Nonpareil Estate – Baker’s bend viewpoint – Nagrak peakThis trail meanders through beautiful streams and viewpoints which are breathtakingly beautiful. Do not miss to stop by and appreciate this beauty while climbing your way up to the peak. At the end of the trail we may choose to return to the hotel or stay the night in Nagrak Holiday Bungalow. There is only one accommodation option available here therefore it’s advisable to book it in advance if you’d like to stay a night there.
Horton plains National Park – Devil’s staircaseThe 3 hour trek at Horton Plains National Park covers spectacular views of waterfalls, cloud forests and lush plains and grasslands, which is home for an extended list of fauna including a multitude of species of endemic birds, Samda Deer, and endangered species like Sri Lankan Leopard, Purple Faced Langur and Red Slender Loris. The main viewpoints along the trek include Baker’s falls, world’s end and mini world’s end.
On our way back to the hotel we stop by Devil’s staircase viewpoint for a quick photo break. Catch the train from Ohiya to Haputale which will be another wonderful, authentic experience.
We travel to the Southernmost beach of the island today, away from the mountains and trees.
Highlight – En route, we visit the Udawalawe Elephant transit home where orphaned and sick baby elephants are being fed and cared for until they are strong enough to be released into the wild. The afternoon feeding time is at 2.30 and it would be a wonderful experience to see hungry calves running to their stations to be bottle fed. If time allows you can enjoy a jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park.
Mirissa is the surfer’s paradise. The last day in Ceylon is dedicated to a day full of sun, sea and sand. Mirissa offers surfing spots for both amateurs and pros in the sport. One hour away from Mirissa there is another breathtakingly beautiful bay at Hiriketiya Beach which is another wonderful place for surfers.
If you do not like the sport then we can enjoy a whale and dolphin watching tour which will be another once in a lifetime experience.
Snorkeling at Secret beach or Turtle Bay are two other alternatives possible while you’re in Mirissa.
After an enthralling day at the beach, visit Coconut Tree Hill to watch the Sunset and click some stunning #instaviral pictures of the last evening in Sri Lanka.
We bid farewell to the paradise island today. Until it’s time for the flight, we can either explore the highlights of down south or do some last minute shopping in Colombo.
A day use room can be arranged close to the airport for you to relax and refresh before boarding the flight back to home.
