Located in the Southern tip of the Indian peninsular, close to the equator, Sri Lanka is surrounded by pristine blue waters of the Indian Ocean. In account of its small size, it takes only 4-5 hours to travel to a beach location from any innermost city in the island. Whale and Dolphin watching, surfing, wakeboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with turtles and windsurfing are among the humongous list of water based adventures you can experience in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka receives North East monsoons from November to April and South West monsoon from May to October. Although sudden rain has to be expected throughout the year we plan our tours based on these two main rainfall seasons. In this tour we cover the Southern Coast hence the best time to travel would be from November to April.
Negombo is the nearest city to the airport therefore do not miss a night in Negombo to relax and refresh after the flight. Negombo is famous for its fishing culture and churches. This city where the majority is Christian, is renowned for its cultural and social uniqueness. Thus it is also referred to as the Little Rome of Sri Lanka.
Highlight – The top attractions include a not-to-miss visit to the heart of this town, the fish market. Its colorful riots will give you an experience like no other. This fishing town mostly depends on this market, therefore it is one of the best places to sneak peek into the lives of fishermen in Sri Lanka.
The other activities in Negombo include, a visit to the Negombo Lagoon and bird watching in Muthurajawela Marshes and a boat ride in the Hamilton Canal. This ride is an exciting way of seeing the fishing town coming to life along the river.
Do not miss the city tour by tuk-tuk to visit the beautiful old churches with Gothic architecture and stunning ceiling murals. St.Mary’s church, St. Sebastian’s church in Wellaweediya and St. Sebestian’s Anglican Church are among the most visited Churches in Sri Lanka. St.Sebestian’s church at Katuwapitiya became popular after the shocking Easter attack in 2019 where more than 100 lives of devotees of Christ were ruthlessly taken away.
A well spent evening in a seaside restaurant, with mouthwatering seafood and cool sea breeze will take away any fatigue of the day. Boost up your energy to start traveling inland where more adventures await.
We depart the West coast to explore the South Coast today. Highly concentrated with historical and cultural elements, Galle was identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions.
The Southern Expressway makes Galle easily accessible from Colombo, therefore in just 2-3 hours of time we reach the exotic beach city of Galle. We check in to the hotel and enjoy the afternoon at leisure before heading towards the fortified old city. The chic boutiques, cafes and buildings with colonial architecture, lined up inside the city walls create a magnificently beautiful maze that one would love to be lost in. Stroll in the narrow laneways leisurely or hop into a tuk tuk to take the best out of this visit. The lighthouse, old post office, Dutch Reform church, maritime museum, All Saints Anglican Church will create a vintage vibe before us while petit restaurants will add more flavor to your evening.
Starting the day early today, we drive off to Mirissa for an adventurous boat ride to see Whales. Whale sightings depend on various matters including the traffic at sea and the climate.This4-6 hour ride is often bumpy, and quite a challenge if you’re prone to motion sickness. Breakfast and snacks will be served on the boat until the experts roam the waters for whales and dolphins.
Have a slow afternoon by the beach or at the hotel to re-boost energy after the boat ride. You could also enjoy the rope swing to take that very snapshot which goes viral on instagram. This is a heap of fun and definitely one of the best things to do in Galle.
Snorkeling at Secret beach or Turtle Bay are two other alternatives possible while you’re in Mirissa.
Highlight – In the afternoon we enjoy a boat ride in Madu River which is another must-do during your stay in the south. Enjoying a fish foot therapy, visiting the cinnamon island for a refreshing cup of cinnamon tea, watching water birds and riding underneath a mangrove canopy shares the spotlight of this ride
We dedicate this full day for water sports! Enjoy many fun filled activities including jet skiing, scuba diving, banana boat ride, sofa ride, donut ride and snorkeling.

After a day full of thrilling activities it is finally the time to enjoy a good ayurvedic massage.
Hidden in a dense forest, is another pristine blue water beach. As the name suggests, Jungle Beach is accessible through Rumassala forest reserve which is also of historic importance.
The legend of Rumassala is closely linked with the epic tale of Rama and Sita; A kidnapped princess, a heroic battle to save her, a fallen warrior, a flying demi god carrying a holy mountain of herbs from Himalaya to Lankapura to save him. It is believed that five pieces of this mountain were scattered in different places in Sri Lanka, of which Rumassala is one.
We spend the day at leisure on the breathtakingly beautiful beach today.
A trek in the forest reserve would also be a wonderful experience. It’s also known as the Himalayas in Sri Lanka as it is home for herbs which can only be found in the Himalayas. There is a fake lighthouse built by the British to thwart the enemy ships from reaching galle fort. Guided by the light of this pillar, enemy ships sailed towards Jungle beach believing it to be the Galle harbor but were demolished by the natural rock beds close to the beach. These shipwrecks are still being discovered by divers from the ocean bed in close waters to the Jungle beach. Do not forget to visit the temple and the statue of the demi-god Hanuman, who is believed to be the reason why Rumassala stands in its place today.
Today, we bid farewell to the paradise island. On your way to the airport, stop in Colombo for last minute shopping.
If time allows you can enjoy the Colombo city tour which covers Pettah markets, Red Mosque, Gangarama temple, Lotus tower, Galle face and the Port City.
